Concealed Pistol Licenses are governed by MCL 28.421 et. seq. For information on Concealed Pistol License in Michigan statute, click here
New Concealed Pistol License Applications
Start your application here: Concealed Pistol License Application. Please do not sign the application until Clerk's Office staff administer an oath to you.

The Office will be able to process new applications for Concealed Pistol Licenses through the scheduling of emergency appointments only until further notice.  You are welcome to contact the Office by phone or email for more information.

To request an appointment to process emergency transactions with the Office, please email inghamclerk@ingham.org or call 517-676-7201.

Your application must be submitted in-person because the application requires that you sign under oath.

When submitting your application for a new CPL you must provide your:
  • Original course completion certificate, and
  • Michigan Driver's License or Identification Card
Fingerprinting & Background Check
After submitting your application to the Clerk's Office, you will be provided a receipt that you will take, along with your government-issued identification, to the Sheriff's Office to be fingerprinted.

The Sheriff's Office is located at 630 North Cedar Street, Mason, MI, they fingerprint from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday (except holidays) by appointment, and the fee is $15.00.

Fingerprinting triggers a Michigan State Police background check to determine your eligibility to be issued a CPL. You have 45 days to be fingerprinted or your application is automatically withdrawn.
Renewal Concealed Pistol License Applications

You may renew your CPL six months before it expires.

Michigan residents with an existing concealed pistol license (CPL) can now also renew their license online here.

Online renewal requires a personal identification number (PIN). CPL renewal letters are mailed to the CPL holders approximately six months before expiration.  The PIN is included in that renwal letter.

If a CPL holder’s renewal notification letter does not contain a PIN, he/she may request a new renewal notification letter directly from the county clerk that issued the CPL.

If you have a CPL through Ingham County, but do not have a renewal letter, that could be because you have moved and did not update your address with the office.

Regardless, please email inghamclerk@ingham.org with a copy of your CPL and Michigan Driver's License or Identification Card. Please indicate that you need a CPL renewal letter mailed again and include your most recent mailing address.

In addition to online renewal, CPL holders may also renew their license by mail with a completed application and payment to the Michigan State Police. Application materials and checks made payable to "State of Michigan" can be sent via First-Class Mail to the following mailing address:

Michigan State Police
Attn: Concealed Pistol License Unit
P.O. Box 30634
Lansing, MI 48909
